I came to learning design through visual arts and neurobiology, and a decade of applied work across higher education, research, and the public sector. Those paths converged on one principle: learning and wellbeing are not separate systems.
The work draws on adult learning theory and the science of learning, instructional systems design, knowledge mobilization and implementation science, Universal Design for Learning, and disability scholarship. It operates at the level of individual courses and the organizational systems around them.
Relevance, agency, belonging, social scaffolding and reflection make learning stick. They also support cognitive health. Designing for one strengthens the other, and organizations that pursue both get more of each.
Clear purpose, assessment aligned to intent, and protected time for practice are what produce results. Designing at that level takes longer than building a course and changes what a program is capable of producing.
Barriers removed during design produce learning that is stronger and useful to a wider range of people. The people who encounter those barriers understand them best, so learners take part in the design from the start.
Understanding forms through relevance, active experience, social consolidation and reflection. A sequence built on that rhythm produces capability rather than completion.
Procedures are quick to write. The orientation underneath them shifts through practice, a different design problem from knowledge transfer and the one that decides whether a change holds.
Evaluation designed alongside a program, rather than after it, measures change in how people think, work and perform. It also stands up to a regulator.
Range is decided in how goals are set, how participation is structured, and how outcomes are assessed. Designing all three for it produces learning that is stronger for everyone.
Uptake depends on relationships, formats and timing, all of which can be designed alongside the research rather than bolted on once it is published.
Organizations usually hold the subject-matter expertise already. The work adds the architecture that turns it into something learnable and durable, and a clear picture of the conditions it has to hold up in. I begin with diagnosis and design for handover from the outset.
